Tuesday 11th December

Today I filmed my other two actors, one who was just singing and the other was signing and playing the guitar. I decided to throw in a tambourine as this not only fit with the genre but also featured in the music video itself. Overall I think the filming of my music video went very well, this is because one of my actors is a drama student and is therefore comfortable in situations such as this where they have to appear on camera. Also my other actor is in a band and has played in front of big a crowd before which has made him more comfortable with this.

I have filmed my first actor for my music video in the green screen room. Initially my actor was very nervous and felt uncomfortable which meant that the first run through was not quite right and we had to film that again. Once my actor became more comfortable however we were able to collect some very good footage from several different angles.

Wednesday 7th November

I have had to reconsider my actor for my music video as one of my actors pulled out last minute, this has set my music video back slightly as I now need to find somebody else to appear in my video.  However, this has not been all negative as I have now spoken to my other two actors to ensure that they are comfortable and spoken through will them about any possible worries they might have had.

Friday 2nd November

Over the past few days I have been doing some costume planning for my video, I have visited my actor’s houses and helped to pick out outfit for them to wear for the shooting of my video that would be appropriate for my genre of country/ indie.  I tried to stick to the guidelines which I found out when doing my research task into the genre, and of course working with the clothing that the actors already owned as well as I want them to feel comfortable and be able to relax during the filming.

I have been researching into music theory, mainly Andrew Goodwin over the past day. Andrew Goodwin suggests that there are 5 main aspects of music videos that audiences pick up on, which are:
Through beats
Narrative and performance
Star image
Relation of visuals to song
Technical aspects of music video
 Learning about this theory has helped me to think of ways in which  can incorporate these aspects into my music video, hopefully to make it successful and make audiences want to watch it.


I have created a power point on some music videos that i really like and have inspired me to create my own music video.  These music videos all include unique aspects that i would like to include in my music video if it were possible.

Over the past week I have visited the location of where i will be shooting my music video, I have taken photos of the types of places that will appear in my location and an example of places where I could place the playing cards. Visiting the location that I will be filming on has also given me some more inspiration for elements i can include in my music video.

Tracking an artist throughout their career: Green Day

Diary: Monday 1st October

I have researched into an artist or band throguhout their career, i picked the band Green Day because they have been around for a number of years and are still very successful. Research into Green Day has helped me to gain an overall understanding of the difficulties and the benefits that bands and artists experience through out their career, and how its not as easy to make it successfuly as the media portrays it to us. I have picked a much less famoud band for my actual music video, i feel like this was the correct choice because not many people know about them, infact neither did i until i started doing my music videos, therefore nobody will have an expectation of how my video will look, which gives me more confidence to be more experimental with the way i shot my video.

Analysis of a students work: Uxbridge College

This is a music video of Joy Division- Disorder by a student in Uxbridge College. The video begins with a shot with the name of the band and the name of the song, this establishing shot is the short of thing that i wish to include in my own video because it allows the audience to know what song they are listening to if they dont know it. The video is shot from a persons perspective, although it is never revealed to the audience who they are. The shot is blurry which gives the effect that the person is walking quickly through each of the locations. The locations change from a house, to the woods, to busy streets etc. Towards the end of the video the shots are then reversed as the person moves back in time. The fact that the whole video is shot in black and white, this is quite a sophisitcated effect.

Diary: Thursday 27th September

Over the past few days i have emailed the band First Aid Kit to ask their permission to use their song 'King of the World' in my music video. I have also researched into the edirting software that i will be using throughout the production of my music video, i will be using the programmes Photoshop, Premiere and After Effects. I have experiences using some of these programmes such as photoshop, which i aquired the skills of using last year whilst creating my magazine. I have also analysed some albums digipaks to establish an initial idea of the sorts of things that i will need to include i my digipak when i make it.

Research into relevant music genre: Indie Folk

Diary: Monday 24th September

I have soent the last few days researching into the genre relevant to my music video which is Indie Folk. This has shown me the artists that current artists of the genre have got their inspiration from such as Jeff Buckley. It has also shown me the types of instruments that are used within the genre, this has given me an idea of the sorts of instruments that are probably used in the song i have chosen. Most performance based music videos in the genre will show the artists using these instuments, if i do a perfromance based video i would like to do the same thing.

I have been researching into the band that i have chosen, First Aid Kit. They are a Sweedish duo made up of sisters Johanna and Klara. The song i have chosen is King Of The World which is a folk/ indie song. Research into the band has helped me to understand how to style the two girls that will appear in my music video.

Research into a music director and their previous work

Diary: Tuesday 18th September

I have created a powerpoint on the research i have done into Music Directors and their previous work. One of the dicrectors i chose was Mark Klasfeld, who has done music videos for the likes of Katy Perry, Jay-Z, Foo Fighters and Sum 41 etc. I also discovered that he has also directred some documentaries and indepednent films. Another director i researched into was Colin Tilley, who has done music videos for the likes of Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake and Usher. Tilley has directed over 19 video projects for Chris brown, this shows that if an artist likes your work they will use you again the the future. This research has helped me to see the different styles in which directors like to use. i have also discovered that most directors will shoot music videos in the same genre, one that they specialise in such as Rock or Pop.

Over the summer I researched some songs in the alternative/ indie genre. I picked 5 of my favourite songs, and analysed them so that i could work out what typical conventions appeared in videos in that genre. I think this research has been helpful because it has given me an idea of the sorts of things to include in my own video.

Diary: Wenesday 15th August

I am struggling to think of an idea for my music video, i thought that if i chose the song first it would make it easier to come up with an idea, this however has proved not to work as i am unable to come up with an idea. I think this is due to the fact that the song i have chosen already has a music video of its own, and i have watched this many times to try and gain some inspiration, therefore i am unable to think of an fresh ideas for it because i am trying to mimic the current video. In the next few days i need to find a new song to use or find an idea for my video, so that i can begin the planning stage of the project.

Diary: Monday 31st July

Today i found some Photographs of digipacks to get a general idea of the sorts of conventions that appear typically on artists and bands didgipacks. I noticed certain things staright away, for example, many artists have very plain and simple didgipacks which focus mainly on themselves with a simple background and one or two block colours, whereas bands tend to have much more going on in their digipacks. I think i will go for a more basic digipack, as my music video will be based around one artist. Here are some examples of digipacks i looked into:

Diary: Sunday 22nd July

I have decided on a song for my music video, Kyle Andrews- You Always Make Me Smile. This is a very happy, upbeat and cheerful song. It also has very simple lyrics which can be easily acted out in my video. I have decided to do a narrative based perfomance for my video, with some perfomance, however it will be infront of a green screen. Although this is only a very basic initial idea, i feel like it can be expanded and improved to make a very effective music video.

I have been looking over music videos that my friends from Uxbridge College created for their coursework this year. I hoped that this would help me get some inspiration for my music video, as i am currently finding it very difficult to come up with an idea or decide on a song. However, i have decided to continue to look at as many music videos as possible over the next few days, until i find a song or an idea.

Looking into the conventions of music videos has helped me to think about certain things that i will need to include in my music video. I hope that knowing the typical conventions that are used in music videos will help me to decide the sort of things i want to include in my music video. It has helped me to decide on the genre, as i feel that the conventions of a indie/rock music video are more interesting than that of other genres such as pop which can be considered to be quite cheesy.

I have been watching more music videos this week in an attempt to gain some initial idea for my music video. I have always liked the song 'Misery Business' by Paramore, and i think that this song would be good to use for my video because of its lyrics. I am going to spend the next few days thinking of some potential ideas for this song.

I have been watching several music videos over the past week, to try and gain some ideas and get some inspiration. I have listened to music from all genres, especially Indie and Rock. I have watched performance videos, narrative videos and even lyric videos. I havent deciced on a song, or even a genre of music yet, but i plan on using the next few weeks to find the song for my music video, and also finding the people who will be involved in my video.

Diary: Monday June 11th

Today we started out year 13 project in media studies; making a music video. I look forward to the following year as i think it will help me to develop my skills using programmes such as Premiere, as well as helping me to develop my creativity skills and use my imagination. I love music, and enjoy watching music videos aswell. I have a wide taste in music, which gives me more variety when choosing a song, it also allows me to get inspiration from different genres of music. Overall, although i do have some concerns about this project, I am looking forward to it.
